Pexa Wins Queen’s Award for Enterprise

Many congratulations to Pexa, the UK’s leading supplier of coatings and surface treatment products to aerospace and other high-tech engineering markets. “We are thrilled to win the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for the first time”, says Jim Rowbotham, founder and Managing Director. “HRH The Duke of York was kind enough to declare our new premises open when we moved here a couple of years ago. He suggested we try for the award and, encouraged by that, we did. Thanks to him for giving us a push in this direction”.

Pexa began in 2002 as a business based on specialist know-how in aerospace coatings and establishing a unique position in the market, genuinely working with its supplier partners to develop strategies for commercialising, delivering and technically supporting their products. Pexa’s customers are high-tech engineering companies; manufacturing and maintaining aircraft & defence equipment, energy infrastructure and electronics.  ey products are surface treatments, paints and NDT products. They have very high-performance properties but are also subject to chemical regulations and are hazardous for shipping. These are important challenges when supplying them internationally and Pexa’s team is the best in the World at managing these issues and ensuring that our customer’s projects are delivered on time.

Pexa now has more than a thousand customers in over forty countries and provides products and services for major projects such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Airbus A350XWB and the F-35 Lightning II amongst many others. This award is for their growth in International markets of over 70% in the last 3 years. In that time, Pexa has opened new offices and outlets in Spain, southern France, North Africa and India, and adapted their offer to match different regional needs and established offices with teams recruited in the regions they serve.

“This award is really due to a shared effort from our own team whose know-how and energy have made the company a success, as well as our supplier partners who have supported us throughout and, of course, our customers and their faith in us which we try to repay every day”.

Pexa has great plans for the future and increasing internationalisation is an important part of them. The aerospace industry will continue to grow globally, and Pexa’s UK roots give them a great knowledge base and experience which helps to serve their customers well. They now have the platform on which to build their offer around the world.

ADDEV Materials Press Release

Since 2016, it has been the ambition of ADDEV Materials Group to become an international leading player in the field of aeronautics, space and defence, by creating a dedicated business unit. The acquisition of the Graytone Group and its subsidiaries Pexa and PSG, is a move towards realising that ambition. Both companies specialise in added value services and expert distribution of surface treatments, coatings, chemicals, composites and other materials mainly dedicated to the aerospace & defence markets. This activity is supported by a high level of customer service and technical expertise.

For more than 10 years, ADDEV Materials has offered its customers innovative and responsible materials solutions, centred around the three key elements “materials – converting – service”. Historically focused on the converting of flexible materials, such as adhesive tapes or technical films, ADDEV Materials has expanded its know-how to liquid custom packaging solutions, adhesives and chemicals, through the acquisition of DIMEX (Toulouse) in 2015 and VMS aircraft (San Diego, USA) in 2016. The acquisition of Pexa and PSG is therefore part of the company’s strategy to expand its supply range of adhesives, sealants and chemicals, to include paints and coatings, together with value added activities such as small batch manufacturing, tinting and decanting.

Pexa and PSG propose an extended offer, complementary to those of ADDEV Materials:
-Pexa, based in Holywell Green in West Yorkshire, in the north of England, has developed a position as a preferred partner for Akzo Nobel Aerospace Coatings in the UK, France and Spain. Pexa has also recently created a subsidiary in India, laying the foundations for a future strategic platform to support ADDEV Materials’ customers in that region.

– PSG, based in Bordon in Hampshire, south west of London, has been able to forge strong strategic partnerships with world leading manufacturers of specialist aerospace coatings and composites such as PPG Industries, Sherwin-Williams, Henkel and Gurit.

We expect excellent synergies from the Graytone project in Europe and Middle East. We believe we can achieve significant cross fertilisation as an “Adhesives & Chemicals” custom made solutions expert, with our worldwide customers, our world-class manufacturers’ partners and our geographical position in Europe and North America” Julien Duvanel, ADDEV Materials CEO and Aerospace & Defense Business Unit CEO.

The ADDEV Materials business philosophy is very much in line with the Graytone concept, which is to provide a highly extensive product offering, combined with a high level of technical support, added value converting activities and strong customer service orientation.” Graham Yates, Graytone Managing Director.

ADDEV Materials acquires Graytone

We are pleased to announce that, as of 4th April 2019, Graytone Ltd will become part of ADDEV Materials, a French owned custom repackaging expert and distributor of high- performance materials specialist for the aerospace and aviation industries, based in Lyon, France. Graytone’s specialist coatings distributors, Pexa and PSG, will continue to operate from their current locations, as separate legal entities, with their own management teams and strategies, as before. Customers and suppliers alike can expect to experience the same professional service and support which they have enjoyed over a period of nearly 50 years.

The acquisition represents a great opportunity for the Graytone group of companies in terms of expanding our global reach through ADDEV Materials’ facilities in Europe and North America. In addition to this, it will offer the potential to widen our product portfolio (aerospace adhesives and sealants, coatings, chemicals, tapes, technical films) to our ever- increasing customer base, and from increased investment, allow us to deliver on our ambitions to grow our business.

We expect excellent synergies between the two organisations. The ADDEV Materials business philosophy is very much in line with the Graytone concept, which is to provide a highly extensive product offering, combined with a high level of technical support, added value converting activities and strong customer service orientation. As part of the ADDEV Materials organisation, we plan to go from strength to strength and our trading partners will benefit from our increased resources and ambition.

Lionel Wood – Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Lionel Wood, co-founder of PSG, at 92 years old.

Lionel (left) & Tony Wood – co-founders of PSG

Lionel and his brother Tony had worked as salesmen for industrial paint manufacturers Docker Brothers before going it alone in 1970 when they created Paint Services (Godalming) Ltd along with Michael Gauntlett. From humble beginnings the company enjoyed steady growth, with 80% of the business concentrated on the industrial sector. The advent of colour mixing machines in the early ‘80s revolutionised the world of industrial paints, and signalled the demise of the reseller in that sector. PSG saw an opportunity to steer the company in a different direction, and under Lionel’s guidance, the next 10 years saw PSG evolve into a fully certified supplier of aerospace and defence coatings. Today this sector represents over 90% of PSG’s business.

In his private life Lionel had many and varied interests. He was a very talented artist with a keen interest and love of the arts in general, and his passion for cricket – both as a very capable player and a devoted Lords spectator – was legendary. He enjoyed a wonderfully happy family life and had a wide circle of friends. Lionel’s gentle and infectious charm touched everyone he met – whether in business or out of it. Several long serving personnel at PSG speak of his incredibly positive influence on them when they joined the company.  Lionel made everyone feel respected and valued, and he will always be remembered as one of PSG’s founding fathers.

PSG invests in Top Talent

It’s all change at PSG, with two industry high flyers taking key roles to drive the future growth of the organisation.  Robert Waddell is taking the reins as General Manager and Chris Mellings as Head of Composites.

For Robert, whose unparalleled sales experience in our industry has spanned almost 30 years and several continents, he is essentially “coming home”. Back in 1990 he joined PSG as a Sales Executive, honing his considerable skills and gathering invaluable sector experience over the next 11 years. He joined Akzo Nobel Aerospace Coatings where his career went from strength to strength – moving with his family to Thailand as Technical Sales Director with responsibility for Asia Pacific. With a spell at PSG key customers Air Livery and IAC, Robert has gathered an in-depth understanding of the selling process from both sides, and will, we know, channel his considerable talents in taking PSG to new heights.

Meanwhile we are delighted to welcome Chris Mellings to PSG – an exceptional sales and marketing professional with broad experience in both the composites and adhesives sectors of the aerospace and automotive markets. Chris has gathered his comprehensive knowledge and experience in senior marketing and sales roles at market leaders including Huntsman, Aero Consultants, Trelleborg and Gurit. His extensive understanding of this fast moving area will be invaluable to PSG as it continues to develop an ever growing presence in the world of aerospace composites.
